Sunday Summary: 2/28/10

As I write this, a friend of mine is in labor.  Not only has she not found out if it is a boy or a girl, she and her husband are keeping their final name choices secret until they meet their new little person.

Readers, the suspense is killing me.

In the meantime, I’m amusing myself with a few links:

In starbaby news, besides the arrival of Padma Lakshmi’s daughter Krishna Thea:

Lastly, I usually disagree with the Name Lady, but I laughed out loud when I read her recent column of questions from her inbox.  My favorite is this:  “I chose my daughter’s name when I saw it graffitied on a truck when I was pregnant with her so I don’t know it’s history. What can you share about this name?”

I’m laughing so hard I actually forgot about my friend and her as-yet-unnamed-newborn.

That’s all for now.  Have a great week, and thanks for reading!

Name of the Day: Honoria

Some virtue names are simply words found in any dictionary.  Others are more subtle choices that just happen to have virtuous meanings.

File Honoria in the second category – and please thank Corinne for suggesting her as Name of the Day.

Name of the Day: Richard

He’s a regal choice and a former member of that elite fraternity, the US Top Ten.  But has he been sunk by his awkward nickname?

Thanks to Corinne for suggesting Richard as Name of the Day.

Name of the Day: Silke

Cecilia is a saint.  Silk is a fabric.  Today’s choice falls somewhere in between.

Thanks to Bewildertrix for suggesting Silke as Name of the Day.

Name of the Day: Christian

Nevaeh strikes many as too religious.  Ditto old school Biblical picks like Hezekiah or extreme virtue names like Prudence.  But this choice is surprisingly mainstream.

Thanks to Shannon for suggesting Christian as Name of the Day.

Starbaby News: Welcome Krishna Thea

Padma Lakshmi followed through on her promises to bestow a traditional Indian appellation on her baby-on-the-way. Krishna Thea Lakshmi arrived over the weekend. (Hat tip to Celebrity Baby Blog.)

I’m far from up on my Sanskrit names, but I’d always thought of Krishna as masculine.  A quick Google search suggests that I’m wrong about that.  But could it be that, by choosing a daughter’s name with at least a hint of gender neutral style, Padma is tapping into a trend?  And does Thea have an Indian origin, or was there some other influence?

For now, I’ll speculate wildly and look forward to the first post-baby interview.  And the next season of Top Chef!

Name of the Day: Gertrude

Once worn by queens and saints, today she’s oft-cited as the name you’d never give your girl.

Thanks to Jillian for suggesting Gertrude as Name of the Day.

Sunday Summary: 2/21/10

If you watched Thursday’s Project Runway, you spotted the mini models for the “Little Bit of Fashion” challenge.  (Designers created a little girl look, and then a companion piece for their model.)  Amongst the pint-sized fashionistas were Ava and Chloe, but there was also a Sylvie.

And you know you’re name-obsessed when you’re watching a haunting, twisting tale like Shutter Island and as it builds to the climactic scene you’re listening intently – for the ghostly children’s names.  Ahem.  (And I’m not giving anything away by telling you they are Rachel, Henry and Simon.)

In other name-spotting news:

No Hollywood babies this week, but sports and country music give us a few new arrivals:

While we’re on a musical note, how much free time do you have?  Nancy at Nancy’s Baby Names has a YouTube channel.  Incredibly addictive, even on my sluggish internet connection and aging MacBook.

That’s all for this week.  As always, thank you for reading!

Name of the Day: Dashiell

It’s a special edition Saturday Name of the Day in honor of a birthday boy.

Congratulations to Lyndsay on the first birthday of her darling Dashiell.

Name of the Day: Josue

Joshua has been in the US Top 10 since 1979, longer than all but the most evergreen of given names.  He’s nearly impossible to respell – but he can be translated.

Thanks to Photoquilty for suggesting Josue as Name of the Day.
