Names Worn by Anne Hathaway
Actress Anne Hathaway has made the daunting transition from child star to serious actress – and had an impact on baby names along the way.
In honor of her November 12 birthday, here’s a look at the names she’s worn.
Unlike many well-known actors, Hathaway’s path to stardom was a relatively straight road. In 1999 and 2000, she played Meghan on the short-lived FOX series Get Real. Soon after the series’ cancellation, she nabbed the starring role in the movie that would launch her career.
- The enduring Amelia had reached a plateau in the 1990s, hovering around #200 in the rankings. Then came Hathaway’s breakout role, as Amelia “Mia” Thermopolis in 2001′s The Princess Diaries. Amelia climbed from #199 in 2001 to #139 in 2002. The equally successful sequel was released in 2004, and Amelia’s climb continued. As of 2008, she ranked #68;
- It’s harder to gauge the impact on Mia, the name the character was called throughout the movies. Mia was already hot in 2001, ranking #76. But odds are the engaging schoolgirl-princess character helped push Mia into the Top 20 – where she’s been since 2005;
- 2004′s Ella Enchanted wasn’t the commercial success of the princess franchise, but did help cement Ella as the new Emma. In 2003, Ella ranked #44. By 2008, she was #19;
- Her Brokeback Mountain character – the 2005 role that had us all sitting up and saying “wait – is that really Anne Hathaway?” – has not influenced babynamers. But then, it would take more than a compelling character to encourage modern parents to embrace Lureen;
- We loved her in The Devil Wears Prada, but Andy hasn’t caught on for girls. Andrea – the character’s full name – has been in the girls’ Top 100 since 1962, but not even Runway magazine could make Andrea sound fashion forward;
- Her performance as addict sister Kym in Rachel Getting Married has been lauded, but it is hard to imagine the character’s name catching on. Much like Andy, Kym is a reasonable choice to bestow upon a character in her 20s or 30s – Kimberly peaked at #2 in 1967, and has been in the US Top 100 since 1956. But today it feels more like a name for an expectant mother than a newborn daughter;
- Then there’s 2007′s Becoming Jane. Jane peaked at #35 in 1946. She’s attracted more attention recently, and seems poised for a comeback. The movie probably helped remind many a future parent how much she loved Pride and Prejudice. With Emma so popular, why not settle on the author’s name instead? In 2006, Jane ranked #476. By 2008, Jane stood at #390.
- Speaking of Emma, the actress played one in 2009′s Bride Wars.
What’s next for Ms. Hathaway? She’s rumored to be signed on to star in a Judy Garland biopic. Judy - once a Top 20 pick – has been out of the US Top 1000 since 1999. We’ll have see if the silver screen can help bring about a revival.
And as for the classic appellation worn by the actress herself? File her with Lureen. While nineteenth century favorite Anna has done well in recent years, Anne has languished. She ranked a mere #499 in 2008, down from #311 in 2001. Anne is evergreen, but compared to #26 Anna, #169 Ana and even #392 Annie, Anne is far from the most fashionable of the choices.

Love Anne Hathaway! It’s pretty embarrassing, but I completely love The Princess Diaries 1 and 2… I’ve own them and have watched them both lots and lots of times. I wonder if that’s part of why I love Amelia so much….*ponder ponder*
Love the actress; love her characters’ names less.
Her name (from first to last) is a name I’d give a character in a novel. Such a classic.
Oh, I absolutely adore her real name (first and last!). Classic, indeed!
Amelia is beautiful and, while overused in Internet-land, it is underused in RL.
Ella, Mia, and Emma are all super-popular but, all-in-all, great names. Mia on its own is a little too nicknamey for me.
Andrea “ann-DREE-uh” is dated. Andrea “ahn-DRAY-uh” has potential. But you’re going to have pronunciation issues all over the place. Andy’s a cute, tomboyish nickname, I guess. I don’t like it one bit.
Kym? *headdesk* I don’t even like Kimberly that much, but at least its not Kymberly!
I can’t gush enough about Jane. I simply adore it’s simplicity and beauty.
In the long run, I think she’s played some well-named characters.
She herself shares a name with notable 16th century Anne Hathaway, wife of William Shakespeare.
Looking forward to seeing her star as Judy Garland! I hadn’t heard that rumor, but she seems the *perfect* fit for the role.
