Remember when SJP and Matthew Broderick named their twins Marion and Tabitha and name fans everywhere went huh?  Plus, Marion had two middles (Loretta Elwell) and Tabitha just one (Hodge)?

Turns out that there’s an explanation: Marion was chosen by big brother James Wilkie.  The girls are called Tabitha and Loretta.

As it happens, my aunt was very nearly named Loretta – or so says family legend.

And so I just have to ask: Loretta, Yea or Nay?

Yea! When I was 13 and decided to give myself a bunch of random middle names, Loretta was one of them. :P

Totally like Tabitha & Loretta as a twin pair. :)

Not a fan of Loretta. Just kind of blech to me…

I have a great Aunt Loretta! Not a huge fan of the name, but it’s alright and I think the “Lor” is very pretty. This also makes me think of “Get Back” by the Beatles.

      That’s it! I knew there was a lyrical reference I couldn’t land on … thanks, H!

Er…um…no. Reminds me of Family Guy and Cleveland.

My first grade teacher was Sister Loretta. I actually don’t mind the name.

  6. Marion is much nicer than Loretta! Its funny an R.E (religious education) teacher at my school was called Loretta, I’m not a big fan of it as it goes

This name says Monty Python to me.

Man: “I want to be called Loretta…I want to have babies.”

I actually like Loretta! It has that old southern charm to it.

The thing I dislike about Loretta is the nickname options – Lori feels dated to me, and while Retta/Rett appeals, I feel like Lori would be the default.

Of course, Tabitha lacks an obvious nn, too, though a reader suggested Tibby – only works for a small child, I guess, but better than Tab.

Huh on the nickname thing. I don’t go to either of those, I think Etta straight off and then maybe Lottie.

I quite like Loretta. She has a sweet romantic vibe. I like the idea of using Lottie as a nn.

I don’t really care about the names, but my name is Loretta and I have been called Lotti, Lor, Lory, Etta, Etti, and Lot (which is not even a proper name)!
