Yea or Nay: Sosie

In French, sosie means double – as in on dit que tout le monde a un sosie.  (They say everyone has a twin.)

But Sosie Ruth Bacon, daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, is all-but-one-of-a-kind.  Born in 1992, Sosie’s starbaby status failed to launch the name into general use – Sosie has never appeared in the US Top 1000.

I’ve found a few references to a French Saint Sosie from the 300s, a victim of the Diocletian persecutions.  She also sounds like a logical diminutive for Shoshannah, the Hebrew forerunner of Susannah.

With Sophie and Sadie so popular – and Sedgwick and Bacon so steadily in the public eye – I can’t help but wonder:  Sosie, yea or nay?

  1. Interesting – Sosie isn’t doing well at all! I wonder if that’s because she seems like a nickname rather than a full, formal name? Because I agree, Mookie – she’s not for me, but I find her appealing.

  2. My first thought was Kayser Söze for some reason… I gave it a yea, but it does seem more like a cute nickname for Susanna… I like it in the same way I like Daisy or Poppy or Susie… I don’t mind them, but they’re a bit lightweight for my own children.

  3. I adore Sosie! I think she’s a darling choice and I suggest it whenever possible. DH isn’t buying it for us but perhaps I will persuade someone else into using it someday!

  4. Sosie sounds like a sugary sweet nickname to me. Like something someone called their sister growing up because they couldn’t say sister when they were little. It is a no for me…

  5. It’s cute, but it’s too cute. And I have no clue how to say it. I keep saying Susie, but I’m fairly sure that’s not right. Sew-see, maybe? It sounds like a nickname, not a given name to me. Nay!

  6. It kind of reminds me of Swoozie…like Swoozie Kurts. Not my cup of tea…but not a name to make me roll my eyes, either.

  7. I keep thinking of “so-so”, like not-so-much. The Kaiser Soze reference is great — I think that would have been my next thought. I love the way the name looks, but saying it out does sound too cutesy.

  8. I’d totally use it as a nickname for Susannah–Susie doesn’t do it for me–and Sosie seems so fresh and new!

I can’t see it as a full name, however. Far to nickname-y.

  9. this was/is my nickname. My first name is actually Shoshanna but sometimes people call me Shosh or Shanna. I will tell you that many people mispronounce this name and I was made fun of a tiny bit in grade school with this name. It is pronounced so-see you basically take the name “susie” and say it with an “o” sound instead. It is a cute nickname but I have been trying to dump that name since I was kid because people have such a hard time pronouncing it and they always ask me what it’s short for? In short, because of my own personal experience with my name I try to go by Shoshanna with anyone other than old friends and close family.
