During yesterday’s discussion of Habakkuk, Bek came up with the clever idea of using the nickname Huck. While I still don’t think we’ll be meeting many boys answering to that Biblical appellation any time soon, it got me thinking about Huck.
Huckleberry is nearly as outrageous as Habakkuk. But what about Huxley? It’s the surname of Aldous Huxley, author of Brave New World. He’s the best known of a family with a long history of scientific and literary achievements. (He also happens to share my birthday.)
And so I’m opening up Huxley for Yea or Nay. Please vote!

I like the sound of Huxley and the nickname Huck is very cute (but just as a nickname, please!). Hux would be cute too. But Huxley is one of those names I’d only use if it was a family name for me.

And Bek, LOL. “I’d rather use Habakkuk” might just be the new line whenever I hear another variation on Jaydin/Braylon/Caisen.
When I was pregnant with Ethan, we told people we were going to name him Jimothy.
I voted ‘maybe’ — It’s a teensy weensy bit trendy-sounding, but rather nice, actually. As someone else said, I’d probably only use it if it was a family name, but if any future husband suggests it, it could go in a middle name slot. Maybe.
Huxley reminds me of Heathcliff Huxtable (sp?)! Not a bad association, but it brings to me the slowly drawling voice of Bill Cosby, which used to slightly annoy me. Did I say slightly? I meant to say, ‘It used to annoy me a lot.’
Nay for me + yea for someone else = Maybe. I think Huxley has at least as much potential as Holden or Hudson.

I voted “yea.” It’s not a name I’d ever use personally, but it’s no more ridiculous than any other surname name. It has literary credibility and the current X sound. I wouldn’t exactly say that I like it, but I think it’s usable.
I’m with Emmy Jo on this one – it’s not one for me, but I don’t see it as a real negative in any way for someone else…
In college, the bus stop to get back to school was Huxley Ave. I could never use it for anything but a place name and it will always remind me of the RIPTA.
