Oh, forgot. Katharine can back me up; the British series "The Magic Roundabout" had a Dougal, he's a dog, owned by Florence. He's also a charcter in Diana Gabladon's "Oulander" series, he's in the first two books (IIRC), as Uncle to the main male, Jamie. *sigh* :D That dog may be Dougal's downfall, if too many saw the mvie released here in the States in 2005. It seems to have gone under the radar, as it's got no ratings at IMDb.com (I go there a hundered times a day for pop culture references!). But I still say he's a winner if you're looking to honor Grandpa or Uncle Douglas and aren't willing to use stodgy Douglas. Here in Celtic heavy MA, Dougal would blend in with the Aiden. Callum, Conor, Seamus' running amuck but he'd also stand out nicely due to sounds!

There's someone online somewhere (I think at the Ivillage British site) with a Dariusz. He's about 3, I think. I'm at least 1/4 Polish myself and am familiar enough that Dariusz wouldn't throw me for a loop. (me with Gagi Andrezj Joszef) Polish names? No Sweat!

I rather like Darius, but prefer the funkier Dario myself. Far more flair with that lovely 'O' ending!

No! Ernie Devlin shows up on Harvey Birdman? I haven't seen that show in ages, but I think I need to tune back in, LOL. The similarity between 'devil' and 'Devlin' alone puts the breaks on the name - but I sometimes hear parents toying with the idea of calling their sons Lucifer, so what do I know?

Dougal - that's a thought. We refer to my younger brother's best friend Doug as Doog and Doogle, so somehow I've filed it away in the crazy nickname category - but you're right, it's a perfectly valid given name, with far more panache than Douglas.

And funny you should mention Darien. My husband's favorite uncle was called Dariusz. (His family is Polish.) When he lived in the US, Dariusz became known as Derek. At home, the pet form was Darek, but it sounded like DAHR ehk. We've long toyed with the idea of using Dar- something if we ever had a second son, but could never decide if Darien was quite the right adaptation. Let me give that one some thought, but you're right Darien - or maybe Darius? - bears some consideration.

Can't wail 'til you get to Duncan, Declan and may I suggest a third Celtic choice, a bit more familiar to American ears: Dougal. I think he's snappier & lighter than Douglas and he's not that hard for us Yanks to figure out. I heard a dad calling one last time I was in Boston, which is a great place to listen for Irish/Celtic names. It's a mess o'Irish, there! :D And if you're looking for an acceptable D place name , maybe Darien (as in CT) would work?

Ernie Devlin shows up as a character on Cartoon Network's "Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law", which is a compilation of all the Hanna Barbera cartoons (silly fun for grownups). He is not a pleasant charcter there and I doubt he's helping spread the name. That's good, at least. :)
