It’s been a big two weeks for celebrity baby naming.

We had high hopes for Soleil Moon Frye and Jason Goldberg’s second daughter.  Their firstborn, Poet Sienna Rose, is nicely named.  Sure, it’s a little unconventional.  But if you grew up playing an impish orphan called Punky, what are the odds that you’ll go with a name like Emma?  But Poet’s little sis has been burdened with a heck of a name: Jagger Joseph Blue.

Yes, that’s right.  Jagger Joseph Blue is a girl.

Jagger is a tough name for a kid to wear, but I’d give Punky a pass if she’d chosen this moniker for a son.  But there’s just nothing gender neutral about Jagger.  And when paired with Joseph and Blue?

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest, we officially give this name a 0.

You can read more about their name choice at Celebrity Baby Blog.

Other celebs did a bit better this week.

Halle Berry, possibly one of the most gorgeous creatures to walk this Earth, gave birth to a daughter named Nahla Ariela.  Given that Nahla’s father, model Gabriel Aubry, is also shockingly handsome and odds are that they could’ve named their child Midge and she’ll still turn out just fine.

Nahla is an Arabic name that did not appear in the Top 1000 in the US.  Something tells me, however, that it soon will.

Because of the possible pronunciation headaches, we don’t love Nahla.  (Mom says it is GNAW-lah.  Baby Names World gives a slightly different version, nah lah.)  But we do think that it seems like a nicely exotic, and strong choice for Ms. Berry and Mr. Aubry.  We’ll give it a 6 out of 10.

Our final entry in the starbaby round-up goes to Melissa Joan Hart and Mark Wilkerson’s second child, a son, Braydon Hart Wilkerson.  We’re on record as being against the supernova of Aiden/Jayden/Caidhen/Haden and yes, Braeden, Braydon and Brayden names.  But we’re rather fond of the practice of using the mother’s maiden name in the middle spot.  And they’re actually calling their son Brady, a name that we find quite appealing.  So despite the -aiden taint of the first name choice, we give Braydon Hart Wilkerson a 4 out of 10.

That’s it for new names news, but we would like to tip our hats to J.Lo … while we’re not over-the-moon about the first name Emme, we’re long time fans of her daughter’s middle name – Maribel.  Maribel honors dad Marc’s late sister.  It’s a lovely choice, and one that stands out from the Isabella/Gabriella crowd.

I really love Jagger Joseph Blue, for a boy. It’s quirky, it’s cool, and it sounds really nice as a sibling for Poet. On a girl? Awful. I do like why they chose Joseph, but isn’t that why there are names like, umm, Josephine or Josie?

Don’t care for Nahla, it’s one of those names that confuses me. Is it Nola? Nora? Nyla? No, it’s sounds like a weird, made-up hybrid. I have a nephew named Bryson, and that name still trips me up. Seems like it should be Brice or Bryan.

Maribel is an interesting choice. Mirabelle is on my baby name list, but I’m not sure if Maribel is as appealing to me. To me, it seems like just a mix of popular names Marie and Belle.

And I agree with the Jagger Joseph Blue comment. Seems like an awesome name for a boy! (Not that I would consider it though). I mean couldn’t you have did something more feminine, like Josephine Blue? Poor girl.

Though it is an independent given name, Maribel does sound like it *could* be a mash-up of Marie and Belle. You’re probably right to pick up on that – all the -bel, -belle and -el, -elle names are gaining in popularity these days.

As for Jagger? I remain baffled. Here’s betting she goes by JJ or something similar in years to come.

I like Nahla! It’s the name of the lioness in Disney’s The Lion King! So it’s probably got some African roots, which I think is quite important for Halle since she was so proud of being the first black woman to win an Oscar and all that.

Annabelle, Nahla has Arabic roots, just like Aaliyah and other names that are commonly considered African American heritage choices. So you’re probably right that it’s part of the name’s appeal.

But don’t forget that Halle was the first black woman to win an Oscar for best actress – not the first to win an Oscar. Back in 1940, the amazing Hattie McDaniel was the first African American (male or female) to be nominated for and to win an Oscar, for supporting actress in Gone With the Wind.
